I wanted to make a quick list of ways you can support more local artists who are quietly working hard at their passion everyday. Not everyone has a budget large enough to buy original art and support all the artists they admire. That's fine! I don't either! So, I compiled a few easy ways you can lend support.
Sign up for the newsletter
When you sign up for an artist's newsletter you will get studio updates, invites, and information on sales or events but you also help the artist to see that there are people out there who value them!
Go the extra mile:
Forward their newsletter to someone who might enjoy it or invite a friend to one of their receptions or art markets!
If an artist has work in a show or art market post the event poster to your socials! (Even if you can't make it!) Throwing a screen shot of event details in your Instagram stories is a great way to support an artist.
Go the extra mile:
Post photos of the work you've purchased and tag or link the artist! This helps drive people to the artist. I had a recent sale come my way because of this exact thing.
3. Talk about it
When you have people over to your house, talk about your new art! If someone complements the painting you picked up at the art market, be sure to name drop the artist.
Go the extra mile:
Give out the artist's business card!
Go to events, gallery show, markets, etc. Even if you don't take anything home with you, you will be showing that artist your love and support.
Go the extra mile:
Talk to the artist! Ask a few questions about the piece.
5. Genuine compliments
Tell them why you enjoy their work. It's great to hear positive feedback when you spent hours in the studio doubting yourself! 🙃
Go the extra mile:
Don't compare their work to a famous artist or insult them by saying you saw someone doing the same thing. (Haha, you'd be surprised by some of the rude comments artists get at markets!)
6. Of course, buy their work!
There are so many price ranges to collect at. Buying art doesn't have to be expensive! Buying original work is cool, but it can be pricey. I have made stickers, prints, and coloring books. Some artists put their work on t-shirts and scarves. Ask if they offer commissions, buy an affordable print, or collect their sketches. I make it a priority to offer really affordable original work in a range of sizes and prices.
Go the extra mile:
Become a returning patron!
If you value what artists bring to the world and what art brings to your life, then support them every way you can!
