Studio Tour

Updated: Aug 15, 2022

Let's do a studio tour! I've always loved seeing inside the magic place where an artist creates! Honesty, I've always loved interiors and it is such a delight to peek inside someone else's world. I loved the good old days when the blog reined. Home interior blogs were my favorite – messy, personal, eclectic – like my highschool bedroom with it's bright and warm orange walls, shelves of thrifted knick knacks, easel and paints in the corner, hanging macrame basket, candles, textiles, and piles of vintage clothes on top of my bamboo floor rug. My studio feels like an extension of my teenage bedroom in a way. It's messy and chaotic. There are personal talismans everywhere. It's my space to create whatever my heart desires.

My studio is in my unfinished basement. It sounds dark and spidery (it is) but I love it! Before my husband suggested we turn this into a studio, I was working out of a desk in our kitchen. What an upgrade! I love the ability to make a mess, leave out a painting to dry, and spread out to work on multiple projects at once.

The studio has a work bench where I make most of my work. The edge of which is lined in sequined fabric trim with beads and pom poms. This entire wall has finished paintings, quotes, sketches, and in-progress works pinned to it. All of my tools can be found within arms reach - brushes, paints, pencil, etc. - so I never have to fuss around to find things. I have plenty of storage space underneath too. My daughter has her "studio" in this little nook to the right of my space. She gets to make whatever she wants here, she even painted her own mural! I also have a table in the middle of the space to stack finished pieces. The white board is a great multi-use item. I can use it as a smooth surface to paint on, write out info for submitting to shows, sketch ideas out, or organized finished art to see how they look on the wall. Another recent addition is this giant moon that I have mounted to the ceiling. I made this for my sister's wedding and it was just sitting around so I thought why not?!

As you can see, I like to keep little treasures around my studio, an evil eye, a vintage brass box, quartz and obsidian chunks found on my travels, dried herbs and flowers, and candles. There are tarot decks in thrifted wood carved boxes, an aura photograph of my daughter and I, a felt penguin my daughter made me, little goddess/priestess figured, and a little ceramic head my husband made during the time we were dating. These trinkets and talismans help set the mood for creating and keep me feeling inspired. Something else that helps me in the studio is the right music to get me in a creative trance or "flow state." I also reference books on herbalism, ancient Neolithic goddess cultures, myth, and animism to keep the ideas flowing.

Lately, I've shifted from working with acrylic paint or water-based mediums like watercolor or India inks to drawing with ebony pencil, oil pastels, and colored pencils. It's been nice to shift, loosen up and play! Thanks for coming along on this little studio tour!
