Today I am in the studio playing with some new ideas and prepping several different projects while I wait for things to dry.
I was sketching out my ideas on the whiteboard for some sculpture work, I've been carrying around several years worth of ideas. I have been craving clay. I want to get my hands dirty. But I also want to get a few more drawings and paintings done before I jump into it. I know as soon as I get some clay into the studio, it's pull will be so strong that I won't be doing works on paper for a while.
I made a herbal decoction with local herbs and I am currently staining paper in layers to get interesting textures. I've also got some new and interesting tools for marking the paper with ink and charcoal... We'll see how that plays out.
The operative word here is play. It is essential to the first steps of my tea drawing process. My movements have to be loose and free. But I also have to control my brush to get the tea, ink, and charcoal to move the way I want it to. I have to be in conversation with the materials and open to where it flows instead of trying to dictate where it might go. Too much control and the conversation is stifled.
I have been reading constantly this summer and I needed to put the books down and get into the studio!! I'm reading a wide range of stuff but I'll have some more art book reviews coming.
Anyway, on to the next layer of tea, these pages look dry enough!
