A quick list of some of my favorite art podcasts. I can't listen to podcasts while I draw or paint. I need music for that. I need to tap into a flow state and for me that means I need to get out of my mind. So listening to something educational, emotional, or anything "of the mind" just complicates things for me. But, I find that I can enjoy listening to art podcasts while I craft or sculpt. I enjoy podcasts that cover a wide range of niche subjects (herbalism, mythology, earth based spirituality, dreams, thrifting and vintage clothing, science, history, archaeology, unschooling, birth, entheogens, and mind opening conversations to name a few) but here are the art podcasts I listen to.
So, lets hop into it.
A totally not snooty, calming, and enlightening podcast. Each episode dives into a single artwork. What I love about this podcast is the host, Tamar Avishai, waxes poetic about the piece and the emotions it evokes. She will get you to see the humanity in those artworks that have you questioning if it's bullshit or a piece that has you saying "I just don't get it." It really is art education for us all! And I got teary during episode 51 on Mary Kelly's Postpartum Document.
Like many of us, the host of this podcast was fed up with the art world's lack of represented women artists. This host, Katy Hessel, has such infectious enthusiasm and passion and I love her interviews. Katy interviews authors, curators, and artists about their lives and careers. Each episode is focused on one female artist from art history or an artist of today. Every episode is a gem that has taught me so much but I absolutely loved the interview with Marina Abramovic. She had me laughing! The Great Woman Artists is probably my favorite art podcast. I am also excited to read Katy Hesels new book, "The Story of Art Without Men."
I binged this podcast while sculpting my daughter's Halloween costume, and I loved it. The Death of an Artist Podcast tells the story of Ana Mendieta's tragic and swept under the rug death. The art world was split into two camps. In camp one, was those that believed her husband, famous artist Carl Andre, had pushed her out the window of his 34th floor apartment. And in the other, those that think it was suicide or an accident. This podcast will break down the evidence, give us a peak into her artworks, and dive into the debate about whether separating the art from the artist, or from art history, is doable or ethical. Ana Mendieta is one of my all time favorite artists. If you are not familiar with her work, I encourage you to view, study, and read about her powerful and feminist body of work before listening to this podcast that combines art history and true crime.
A great one for artist who are also mothers, obviously! I have even been featured on a few of their community episodes! Each episode is full of cathartic admissions, motherhood taboos, the struggles of being a working artist and a parent, and deeply healing realness. Oh, and if you dive into all that has been built around this podcast you will find excellent resources as well. They host retreats, open calls, workshops, and have a gallery space. Last year I was honored to have one of my paintings at Stay Home Gallery.
The following are a few new to me podcasts that I am less familiar with. Maybe I will grow to love them and maybe you will too!
A great podcast with art insider advice! This is for the career artists looking for business advice from other artists, gallerists, and curators.
A good mix of art interviews and art career advice.
Next up, not a podcast, but close enough!
This YouTube channel is no longer updated but I think it is a good one to included. I encourage you to go through the archives and watch a few videos. Some of my favorites includ:
"Art that brings me comfort"
"The definition of art"
"Art made in adversity"
And so much more. This channel is an easy and fun way to understand art from a none pretentious place.
I hope you check these out and enjoy some awesome art content made by passionate art people! If you have a great art podcast you love, please share in the comments!
